Pete’s Picks: A Guide to Week 3 of the NFL

Reading Time: 8 minutes

Heading into week three I’m 14-16-2 overall, I would be over .500 if it weren’t for you Browns and Vikings and your meddling kickers (who are no longer on said teams). It was an eventful week of football with many close scoring games that kept me on the edge of my seat and that’s all i really want when fall comes around each year. I haven’t been disappointed yet, so without further adue, here are my picks for week three.

Jets @ Browns – Browns

Bud Light has installed “victory fridges” throughout Cleveland stacked with free Buds with locks on them that only open once the Browns get a win. This weekend, the The Land goes hammertime on some Bud Lights. Although the Jets are coming off a loss, Darnold still played great. As much as i thought about Darnold taking out his anger on the Browns for taking Baker over him, I don’t see it happening Thursday night. The Browns should be 2-0, period. They’ve played their hearts out and I think it pays off at home on Lake Eerie tonight. The Browns win for the first time in 20 games, and 635 days. Their dryspell gets wet.

Saints @ Falcons – Falcons

This game is very hard for me to choose. Brees and the Saints O looked hot in the second half and late game, but this rivalry is always so close that I have to give the edge to the home team (if Matty Ice can play nice). Julio’s got to have a big day, but I’m taking the Falcons in ATL.

Redskins @ Packers – Packers

The Packers got lucky surviving their last game, as that was an absolute chip shot for Daniel Carlson to shank. Nonetheless it was still a great showing for the Pack against one of the top NFL teams in the Vikes. Redskins blew it against the Colts at home, looked slow, no way they beat the Packers in Lambeau even with A-Rodge deaing with the knee injury.

Colts @ Eagles – Eagles

Colts are coming off of an impressive showing in Washington but the Skin’s defense is not Philly’s. Wentz is back, they return to the Super Bowl winning caliber team we saw last year this weekend. Luck won’t have the day he did in the current capital in the OG capital, not with these fans fueled by Wentz return. Carson should have a big day on the Colt’s secondary and expect the bird’s great squad of RB’s to have themselves a day as well.

Bills @ Vikings – Vikings

Bills are now my clear cut 32nd ranked team in the league. I respect Vontae Davis’s decision to retire, football players retiring when they’d like is not something anyone has the right to judge, it is a barbaric and primitive sport, but in no way do i respect how and when he went about doing it. At LEAST wait until after the game, I think it was entirely impulsive and due to the score. They’re a mess up in Buffalo right now, Cousins and crew look red hot. Vikes by a lot.

Raiders @ Dolphins – Raiders

I definitely don’t see the Raiders going 0-3, and I definitely don’t see the Dolphins going 3-0. The Dolphins look good, but so do the Raiders, and Chucky and the boys know it’s a must win this weekend. Derek Carr is coming off of a record setting completion percentage, and he won’t let his team start 0-3.

Broncos @ Ravens – Broncos

Broncos are 1-5 all time @ M&T Bank Stadium. Baltimore hasn’t been our happy place. DOESN’T MATTER THIS WEEKEND. BRONCOS IN CRAB TOWN TIME TO STAMPEDE THE BALTIMORONS. CU Boulder alumni Jimmy Smith out on the suspension, Case Keenum has himself a MILE HIGH MAGIC DAY at Sea Level.

Bengals @ Panthers – Panthers

This will be a great, physical football game. Panthers seem to be looking to get DJ Moore more involved, which they’re going to need this weekend against a hard hitting defense. The Bengals receiving core looks solid with A.J., John Ross, Tyler Boyd and Eiffert. I look for McCaffrey to have a big day, and Cam to show off that home swag in Charlotte. Panthers win but not by much.

Giants @ Texans – Texans

I was real high on both of these teams to start the year, but the Giants have been looking like last year’s team. The O-Line can’t protect an elderly Eli, and the Texans defensive core will give them Hell. Saquon looks great, a complete, hard nose football player with complete strength, agility, and speed.  This game could be close if the Giants play to their potential, but Eli just isn’t his two ring self anymore (Both over Bellichick, I love you forever Eli). Watson should have a nice day on a Giants D that seems to be lacking, Hopkins and Fuller are just too dangerous.

Titans @ Jaguars – Jaguars

Jaguars smacked the Pat and the score was much closer than it should have been. They absolutely dominated them on the line, through the air, in the secondary, on the ground, every aspect was all Sacksonville. They wanted their revenge and it was felt. Titans have surprised me so far this year, did not pull out that win against Houston but they did. I want to see more production out of Derrick Henry, and I don’t think they’ll get another divisional win this week. Bortles is a lights out franchise quarterback and week after week he’s silencing all the hate he’s had through his career. Fournette will be back, and the dual threat between Yeldon and Leaonard can be deadly. Jags win at home.

49ers @ Chiefs – Chiefs

As a Broncos fan, Mahomes looks absolutely terrifying. Hopefully they slow down this week before they come to Denver on Monday night next week (they wont). Chiefs will pop off in their home opener and look as dangerous as ever against San Fran, the 9ers had an impressive win last week but this Chiefs offense is the best it’s ever looked and there’s no way the 49ers stop it. 10 touchdowns in the first 2 games? Are you KIDDING me?! Hats off to Mahomes, I gotta admit I didn’t think we’d see this side of him this year and definitely not this fast. Tyreek the Cheetah is the new era Devin Hester on special teams and a much scarier threat as a receiver. Kelce is a freak of nature, and when he’s on he won’t be stopped, and it looks like Hunt is getting into his form from rookie year. Andy Reid knew what he was doing with Mahomes and Alex Smith, and we’re seeing his genius in action now.

Chargers @ Rams – Rams

BATTLE LA. This has opportunity to be a great game, two great offenses and two great defenses. Rivers is a man on a mission this season, being so close to the Super Bowl earlier in his career you can see how much he still wants it week to week, and he’s playing like it. Gordon and Ekeler are a monster duo, and it will present a challenge for the rams, but I don’t think there’s any stopping Sean McVay’s team this year. The defense is absolutely elite and in my opinion the best in the league, and Goff and Gurley take zero prisoners on the other side of scrimmage. Brandin Cooks was a massive offseason steal. Many predicted this as the Super Bowl this year, I think there might be a possibility. We’ll see how the teams match up. Rams win in the battle of the City of Angels.

Cowboys @ Seahawks – Seahawks

Cowboys looked like they did two years ago against the G men on SNF, and the Seahawks have lost more than just a step. BUT, Seattle is 0-2 in 2 of the hardest places to play in the league, they haven’t played in front if the 12’s yet. I don’t see Seattle starting 0-3 especially not at home, and they won’t be facing Von Miller or Khalil Mack this week so they already have that going for them. Cowboys really did look great, Dak, Zeke, and the O-line looked awesome, but Seattle is a very, very hard place to win especially with a desperate Seahawks crew. Seahawks get their first dub.

Bears @ Cardinals – Bears

Arizona looks a mess, I really can’t say anything positive for them except Patty Peterson’s still an animal, as is Larry Fitz, but the one highlight for fans in Phoenix is this could accelerate the Rosen project by a lot. Bears defense looks incredible, Khalil mack is earning his money very quickly. Trubisky is gonna have a real future in this league, and I’m a huge fan of both Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen. ALSO, Trey Burton? MASSIVE pick up in the offseaon. Win-win for both teams involved, Trey Burton is getting the playing time he deserves. Da Bears take it in the desert.

SUNDAY NIGHT:

Patriots @ Lions – Lions

Am I the only person who sees huge potential in the Lions on both sides of the ball; especially offense? These receivers are so great and I don’t think this team should be 0-2. I hate you Bill Bellichick, I would love nothing more to see your ex assistant Matt Patricia beat you as his first win as a head coach. Get loud Motown! Take down these Pats in primetime (please).

MONDAY NIGHT

Steelers @ Buccaneers – Steelers

I love all this Fitzmagic action and all the swag he brought out post-game. He’s playing like a Demigod. Jameis most likely will not get his job back at this rate. The receivers look so good. Mike Evans, DeSean Jackson, and OJ Howard are extremely dangerous especially to take it to the house on any given play. This is a distraught Steelers football team though. Between the Le’Veon drama, AB saying “trade me and we’ll see” to a hater on Twitter saying Big Ben has made his whole career, and a team that hasn’t gotten a win but could very likely have two instead; this is where Ben and the boys shine big time. They love waltzing into an away stadium under the lights and quieting the crowd, I know this team wants this win so bad to silence the doubt. These Buccaneers are very hot, but for some reason, I’m still not a complete believer yet.
