Star Wars Episode 9 Cast Announced. Update: Keri Russell Joins Cast

Thank the maker!

With 17 months until the  release of Star Wars Episode IX, we now officially have news about who is returning and joining the cast of the final chapter in the sequel trilogy, and boy is it a doozy. The first and most surprising announcement was the return of Princess Leia played by the late, great Carrie Fisher. Using unused footage from The Force Awakens, JJ and his team intend to honor her legacy and have found a way to do that.

After being suspiciously absent through the last two episodic films, Billy Dee Williams will also make his triumphant return as suave swindler extraordinaire, Lando Calirissian, a move that has been rumored for months. Star Wars legends joining Williams are Mark Hamill as (Force Ghost) Luke Skywalker, and Anthony Daniels as golden protocol droid C-3P0. Luke warned Kylo he would see him around so this is just making good on his dying promise.

On top of the expected returnees from the original trilogy, Episode IX will see the return of our favorites from the sequel trilogy. Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran, Oscar Issac, Lupita Nyong’, Domhnall Gleeson, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd are all confirmed to be in the film as many expected.

We were also given the names of three brand new actors to join a galaxy far, far away! Naomi Ackie, whose credits include Lady MacBeth and Doctor Who will be joined by Richard E Grant who you maybe recognize as the evil Dr. Rice from Logan

Finally in a last second update to the story, Keri Russell has now been added to the list of new actors joining Episode IX. Russell had not originally been on the list of new actors added but it looks as though her deal finally went through and was finalized. Justin Kroll of Variety tweeted right after the initial news was announced and it looks as though he was right on the money.

On top of all of this exciting casting news, Lucasfilm also confirmed that Episode IX will start filming on August 1 at Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom, so you can stop listening to those countdowns on Twitter that told you it started filming last week.
